Joint Institute for Computational Sciences (JICS)

About JICS

The JICS Vision

The University of Tennessee (UT) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) established the Joint Institute for Computational Sciences (JICS) to advance scientific discovery and state-of-the-art engineering and to further knowledge of computational modeling and simulation by

  • Taking full advantage of the terascale and beyond computers in the National Center for Computational Sciences housed at ORNL,

    and by

  • Educating a new generation of scientists and engineers well-versed in the application of computational modeling and simulation for solving for the most challenging scientific and engineering problems.

The JICS Team

The JICS team includes UT-ORNL Joint Faculty appointees, JICS Research Affiliates, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and administrative staff. JICS Joint Faculty members hold a dual position as faculty members within a University of Tennessee department and as staff scientists within an ORNL research group. JICS also has scientific support staff to aid JICS affiliates and students in their use of leadership-class computing.
A complete list of JICS staff can be found on the JICS contact page.

Location

JICS is housed in a new 52,000 sq. ft. building, constructed by the state of Tennessee on the ORNL campus near the Department of Energy
National Center for Computational Sciences, home to some of the world’s fastest computers.

JICS shares the building with the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies (ORCAS), a ORNL-university “think tank” for exploring major issues in science and technology.
